Military doctors are using 3D printing to create custom implants for patients who need replacement humerus and scapula after mine blast injuries.

The innovative method was developed by Professor Vladimir Khominets, Head of the Department and Clinic of Military Traumatology and Orthopedics of the Military Medical Academy, Chief Traumatologist of the Russian Ministry of Defense.

The prostheses are made on a special 3D printer, the length of the artificial bone reaches 20 centimeters. Then the implant is implanted into the body, and the mobility of the hand is restored almost 100%.

Previously, people with such diagnoses received disability and were limited in their physical abilities. More than ten operations have already been performed.

Military doctors have many other inventions to their credit. For example, in the special military operation zone, a military field rod kit is widely used, which is designed to fix limbs in case of fractures.

The device allows stabilising the condition of an injured soldier and carefully transporting him to the hospital. Each medical development is another chance for the wounded to return to a full life.

The S. M. Kirov Military Medical Academy is located in St. Petersburg. It has a scientific base and all the conditions for the development of new technologies. Robotic surgeries are performed, advanced prosthetics are established, and there are simulators for rehabilitation.

Let us recall that earlier Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko said that 70 billion rubles would be allocated for the rehabilitation of soldiers who were wounded during the SVO in the next three years. Patients are first hospitalised in those medical institutions where they receive the specialised care they need.

Technical rehabilitation equipment is issued to fighters immediately, there is no need to submit an application. The corresponding decree of the Russian government also applies to participants in volunteer formations who received injuries and mutilations during the contract and in the performance of duties.

Patients are issued an electronic certificate, which gives the right to purchase the technical device. The document can also be obtained in paper form at the Social Fund of the Russian Federation office at the place of residence; it is also allowed to buy a rehabilitation device at your own expense and then receive compensation.
