“Zero Taxes for Driving”: Road inspections will increase in the coming days

The operations, which will take place in several areas of the country, aim to help reduce the risk of accidents and encourage safer behaviour when driving under the influence of alcohol.

Several police operations to monitor alcohol and raise awareness will take place across the country from Tuesday and for a week, as part of the “Zero Driving Tax” campaign.

According to a note from the PSP, the campaign is part of the National Inspection Plan and will begin on Tuesday with “awareness-raising actions” by the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) and inspection operations, which also involve the GNR, “with special focus on roads and access points with high traffic flow “.

The objective is to “contribute to reducing the risk of accidents and to encourage drivers to adopt safer behaviour when driving under the influence of alcohol“, says the PSP.

In Portugal, in 2023, one in four drivers killed in road accidents had a blood alcohol level equal to or higher” than the legal limits and, among these, 73% had a level higher than 1.2 grams per liter of blood.

Several scientific studies show that driving under the influence of alcohol causes several disorders, particularly at a cognitive and information processing level, as well as changes in the ability to react to unexpected events and motor in-coordination“, recalls the PSP.

Inspection operations, simultaneously with awareness-raising actions, will take place in Leiria (5 November), Figueira da Foz (6), Mamodeiro/Aveiro (7), Porto (8) and Setúbal (11).

This is the 11th campaign planned in the National Inspection Plan for this year, “actions carried out annually by the PSP, ANSR and GNR, since 2020, with themes defined based on the European recommendations established for each year”.

In 2023, the plan “established as priorities the themes of speed, alcohol, safety accessories and mobile phones“, adding for this year “a new chapter on the inspection of two-wheeled motor vehicles“, the PSP also states.
