Most Common Health Mistakes & How to Avoid Them
These are a bit like the sins of youth… Although not only, because I committed some of them quite recently. Time for a little examination of conscience, or rather confession 😉
Bad Diet
I wondered whether to write here about such obvious things as dietary mistakes or lack of exercise…
But in the end – is it really that obvious? Does everyone need to know that my diet used to look completely different? It was incredibly monotonous. The sandwiches I ate most often were those with yellow cheese and ketchup, potatoes were a regular part of dinners, and my favorite snack was chips, eaten in really huge quantities. I didn’t read the ingredients, I ate meat (now I know that it definitely didn’t suit me)… Oh, I could go on about this for a long time, because my diet used to be simply awful.

No movement
I used to have a bad approach to physical activity. I treated sports as a chore, not a pleasure. I wrote a lot more about it in this post:
No flossing
After over 30 years, I can safely say that my teeth are quite weak and prone to decay. However, I am not without blame, because I used to not pay enough attention to taking care of them and not only were they crooked, but I also did not use dental floss. Today, I cannot imagine oral hygiene without them. It is amazing how much food remains in the spaces between the teeth. I am also constantly thinking about buying an irrigator, it is supposedly a great invention.
Taking antibiotics for your skin
Half a year of taking tetracycline? That’s normal. I’ve been through this more than once, because dermatologists were eager to use this last resort to show off the effects on my skin. It doesn’t matter that after I stopped taking antibiotics, the problem returned with double the force… Nobody cared about my digestive system and my ruined bacterial flora. The wrong acne treatment did a lot of damage to my body.

Living in constant stress
I am very resistant to stress, and that hasn’t changed to this day. But I have the impression that I used to live in constant stress and destroy my body because of some total nonsense. I’m not just talking about stress at school or at work. What I mean is that I could, for example, live for several days over a scratch on the body of a car that was a dozen or so years old. Recently Wojtek discovered that someone had scratched my beloved, fairly new car, and I just said “oh well”. I worked for this approach for a long time, and no one will give me back those years wasted worrying about nonsense. But I still think that work, which adds to our worries, is worse than these stupid things. If you have wasted half of Sunday thinking about how terrible Monday is, then in my opinion you absolutely have to change something!

No Vitamin D3 supplementation
There used to be a belief in society that it was enough to go for a short walk on a sunny day to produce the right amount of vitamin D. Today, thanks to science, we know that this is nonsense. I – as it turned out – have a big problem with the natural synthesis of vitamin D, so supplementation is a must for me, also in the summer.
Poorly selected supplements
The issue of supplementation deserves a separate point. I used to be influenced by advertisements and use various, rather random dietary supplements that neither had a good composition nor were they selected for my needs. Now I have more knowledge on the subject and avoid, among other things, all kinds of “multivitamins”, which often have a hopeless composition.
Lack of a holistic approach
As a teenager, it would never have occurred to me that my acne could be influenced by my lifestyle – the aforementioned lack of exercise and poor nutrition. With a sore knee, I went to an orthopedist, not knowing about the existence of physiotherapy and not being aware that knee pain could be caused by, for example, poor hip function. I didn’t think about the fact that some of my health problems were caused by stress. I simply didn’t look at myself as a whole, but looked for solutions to my problems by following the path of least resistance. Today I know that this is not the way, and looking at myself as a whole (a combination of body and emotions) answered many questions for me.
Too little sun protection
I love the sun and a tan, but at the same time I am aware of the harmful effects of UV radiation. On this level, I am looking for a golden mean that will allow me to enjoy basking like a lizard or a cat in the sun, while at the same time reducing the risk of developing melanoma. Unfortunately, I am in a high-risk group, because for most of my life I have used the sun unwisely and have sunburned myself more than once. And every sunburn matters… Now I no longer sunbathe lying flat, on the beach I try to create shade, I apply sunscreen more generously to my body, I like to wear a hat that also protects my face, and if I cannot escape the sun, I put on a cotton, airy shirt with long sleeves. I can’t remember the last time I got sunburned. At the same time, however, I am tanned in the summer, because that is my complexion. I tan quickly during mornings on the balcony, walks with the dog, or other movements around the city, when I am in the sun for a while. At this point, I can’t imagine giving up the sun completely, but where I am now is already a huge step forward for me compared to where I used to be.

Avoiding tests and doctors
My fear of medical intervention in my body is bordering on phobia. This is one of the reasons why a healthy lifestyle has become so important to me… I trust that thanks to it I will be able to avoid many of the things that scare me. Now, however, I know that regular check-ups are an extremely important part of prevention and I do not avoid them as I used to. I stopped being afraid of the dentist, I bought a private medical package to make it easier for me to access tests and specialists… Thanks to this, I now feel like a fully cared for woman.
